Medical Education Students with Disabilities

All questions about disability services and accommodations should be directed to the Associate Director of Student Disability Resource Center, Dr. Maria Keller (maria.keller@ucr.edu) for a confidential conversation about the accommodations process.  The nature of your disability and your conversations will be kept private and will not be shared with the School of Medicine.  Once accommodations are approved, Dr. Keller will coordinate services with the Medical School Director of Academic Success,  Dr. Christina M. Granillo (Christina.Granillo@medsch.ucr.edu).

I'm a Medical Student, can I get accommodations for Clinicals, exams at UCR, Shelf Exams, or high stakes exams, such as the Step Exams?

YES.  You will need to complete an online pre-registration and meet with a Disability Specialist at UCR's SDRC to for accommodations in didactic, clinical, OSCE, and guidance with your application for STEP accommodations.  Our team is here to guide you through the process for STEP accommodations.  The application and forms required for the STEP accommodations are available on the USMLE website.   A great resource to get your accommodations request packet is available from AIM (Access in Medicine), who has created a Guide to Requesting Accommodations on the USMLE Step Exams.  Applying for STEP accommodations is an intensive process and require several months to prepare.  It is best that we start working on this, during your first year of medical school.

The timeline to apply for the STEP EXAM is critical.  Please visit Appendix A: A recommended Timeline for the USMLE Accommodations Request.

In order to be considered for accommodations, students must do the following as early as possible:

  1. Complete an online pre-registration at https://rability.ucr.edu
  2. Provide Disability documentation (not required for an initial conversation).  https://sdrc.ucr.edu/disability-documentation
  3. After you are approved for accommodations, the SDRC will notify the School of Medicine of your approved accommodations
  4. You may be contacted by Dr. Christina M. Granillo (Christina.Granillo@medsch.ucr.edu) to provide you information on the process of accessing approved accommodations.  She will provide you with the necessary steps to take. This includes contacting the appropriate exam coordinator and clerkship coordinator.
