Captioning

Captioning is the process of converting audio content of video into text and displaying that text so that those who are deaf or hard of hearing to have full access to media materials that otherwise would not be readily available.

Pre-recorded Videos

If there are pre-recorded videos in your course that need captioning or a transcript produced due to an approved accommodation, SDRC can assist. Please note that pre-recorded videos should be provided to SDRC at least 3 business days (excluding weekends and holidays) prior to when the class will be given access to a video. The student with the accommodation needs to have access to the captions/transcript at the same time that the rest of the class receives access.

Giving “Edit Access” to Your Video

Giving a staff member from SDRC “Edit Access” to your video in YuJa is a straightforward way to provide the video to them. Please contact sdrc-asl-cart@ucr.edu for the staff member information to use.

To give Edit Access to another user:

  1. Select the video that you would like to share.
  2. Select “Share.”
  3. Type in the name of the SDRC staff member.
  4. Choose “Edit Access” to allow the staff member to download your video. Per YuJa, Edit Access will “Allow the user to access and make changes to the media.” SDRC will use this access only to download videos needed for captioning and will not make any changes to instructor content.

Sharing Media in YuJa

Please contact sdrc-asl-cart@ucr.edu if you would like to discuss a different platform.

Uploading a Caption File

Once you have received the caption file from SDRC (.srt), you can attach the file to your video. If your video is stored in YuJa, please find instructions below:
  1. Select a video thumbnail and then select “More.”
  2. Scroll down to “Accessibility” which will be displayed on the left side of the window that pops up.
  3. Select “Upload.”
  4. Select “Captions.”
  5. You can then browse for the .srt file that matches the video and upload.
Please contact sdrc-asl-cart@ucr.edu if you would like to discuss a different platform.

Yuja Auto-Captioning

For instructors that are interested in captioning their videos, YuJa has the capability to auto-caption videos uploaded by those with an Instructor YuJa account. The automatically generated captions can be edited for accuracy.
Please note that a video that is only auto-captioned is not ADA compliant. If someone in your class requires captions as an accommodation, please send an email to sdrc-asl-cart@ucr.edu for assistance.
